Overview of the stages of the 
English school 
system

We understand that the English school system can appear complex and difficult to navigate. To help you, we have created a summary of the key components and stages of the English education system below.

Early Years Education (Ages 3-5):

  • Nursery and Reception classes, often in primary schools or private settings.

  • Focus on social and emotional development, play-based learning, and basic skills.

 

Primary Education (Ages 5-11):

  • Key Stages 1 and 2, typically ages 5-7 (Years 1 & 2) and 7-11 (Years 3-6) respectively.

  • Core subjects include English, Mathematics, and Science.

  • A broad curriculum including Humanities*, Arts, and Physical Education.

  • National curriculum assessments (SATs) at the end of Key Stage 2.

 

Secondary Education (Ages 11-16):

  • Key Stages 3 and 4, covering ages 11-14 (Year 7-9) and 14-16 (Years 10-11) respectively.

  • Compulsory subjects include English, Mathematics, Science.

  • A wide range of optional subjects and vocational courses.

  • General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations at the end of Key Stage 4.

 

Post-16 Education (Ages 16-18):

  • Students can be educated at Further Education (FE) or Sixth Form colleges, or school-based sixth forms.

  • Students typically study A-levels, vocational qualifications (BTEC, T-Level), or apprenticeships.

  • Entry requirement for universities or employment.

 

Higher Education (Ages 18+):

  • Universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

  • Diverse range of courses and majors.

  • Higher education funding through student loans.
